The following is a list of minor locations in Spirit Riding Free.

Arrowroot Mountains[]

The Arrowroot Mountains are mountains located in south of Miradero. At least prior to her travels with El Circo Dos Grillos, Abigail had not traveled south of them in her lifetime. Solana said that she called them the "Arooroo Mountains" after the sounds of the calls of the bighorn sheep on the mountains: "Aroo! Arooroo!"[1]

Badlands[]

The Badlands are an inhospitable desert part of the frontier that cannot be crossed on foot, somewhere between one and two days away from Miradero on horseback. The Badlands lie between Miradero and the Tuckapaw reservation near Pine Forks,[2] and are also situated somewhere between Miradero and Rancho Conejo, the endpoint of Mr. Granger's annual mustang drive.[3]

Calliope Bay[]

Calliope Bay is a frontier town.[4]

Cemetery[]

The town of Miradero has a cemetery, which Abigail considers to be the spookiest place in town.[5] Its exact location has not been shown.

Chicken Neck Canyon[]

Chicken Neck Canyon is a canyon near Miradero. During a horse-riding break in the PAL' gold-mining operation, Pru wanted to ride to Floating Oaks, while Abigail preferred to check out Chicken Neck Canyon.[6]

Copperhead River[]

The Copperhead River is a river on the frontier. The river had to be forded on the last day of the mustang drive on the approach to Rancho Conejo. Mr. Granger instructed Rusty and Pablo to lasso the the geldings if they were to get antsy and try to swim upriver.[3]

Devil's Canyon[]

Devil's Canyon is a location near Miradero, through which a river flows. It has a swing that the children of Miradero play on. After the failure of the roller coaster at Dead Man's Curve with the destruction of the handcar, Cousin Julian contrived a new plan to hook the swing up to "multi-corrugated rope" like a big rubber band, turning the swing into a slingshot that would shoot children into the river and permit them to do amazing cannonballs. (It is not clear that there really is any such thing as "multi-corrugated rope"; Lucky repeats the phrase skeptically after Julian uses it.)[7]

Floating Oaks[]

Floating Oaks is a location near Miradero. During a horse-riding break in the PAL' gold-mining operation, Pru wanted to ride to Floating Oaks, while Abigail preferred to check out Chicken Neck Canyon.[6]

Greynold Geyser[]

Greynold Geyser is a geyser near Miradero. The PAL had difficulty deciding whether to go to Greynold Geyser (Pru's preference) or Mount Disappointment (Abigail's choice) on their first major expedition together, until Lucky decided they should go to the orphanage to try to deliver Kate and Jim's wedding invitation.[8]

Hangman's Hollow[]

Hangman's Hollow is a small valley near Miradero.[9][10]

La Petite Boulangerie[]

La Petite Boulangerie is a café in the city appreciated by both Lucky and Maricela, and the inspiration for their booth at their school bazaar. When they lived in the city, Lucky's father would take her to the café for a special treat. Lucky would order a hot chocolate, and her father would order "this tiny coffee" (likely an espresso). They would "just sit for hours, talking". Maricela's grandmother took her to the café the last time she was in the city. Maricela's grandmother let her have a cappuccino, and Maricela didn't sleep for three days.

No comparable café existed in Miradero, so Lucky and Maricela decided to try to recreate the experience of the café with their booth for the school bazaar.[9]

Lasso Flats[]

Lasso Flats is a frontier town between about 150 and 200 miles away from Miradero.[11]

Masked bandits who later hit Miradero robbed a bank in Lasso Flats.[12]

In the summer after Lucky's first school year in Miradero, Miss Flores accepted a position as a private tutor for a family in Lasso Flats, but ultimately declined the position upon accepting a proposal of marriage from Lucky's father Jim Prescott.[13]

Mount Disappointment[]

Mount Disappointment is a mountain peak on the frontier near Miradero. The peak is so named for the feeling felt by those first to summit the mountain when, upon reaching the top, they saw an even higher mountain on the other side. Abigail desires to climb Mount Disappointment in hopes it will impress the leadership of the Frontier Fillies enough to give Miradero an official herd.[8]

The PALs had difficulty deciding whether to go to Mount Disappointment (Abigail's choice) or Greynold Geyser (Pru's preference) on their first major expedition together, until Lucky decided they should go to the orphanage to try to deliver Kate and Jim's wedding invitation.[8]

Pine Forks[]

Pine Forks is a frontier town across the Badlands from Miradero. The Tuckapaw reservation, where Mixtli is from, is near Pine Forks, and Mixtli was to be sent back there by Grayson and the Sheriff until his rescue by the PAL.

Grayson's Auntie Peg lives in Pine Forks.[2]

Pitchfork Canyon[]

Pitchfork Canyon is a canyon near Miradero. The PALs enjoy watching the sunset there because, according to Abigail, when the sun goes down, it turns the entire valley to gold.[14]

Punta Rivera[]

Punta Rivera is a peak near Miradero. Pru wants to ride there for lunch, but instead Lucky takes her to Silverlode to find Cousin Julian at the Dusty Rose Hotel.[15]

Rattlesnake Ridge[]

Rattlesnake Ridge is a location near Miradero, and a favorite riding spot of Abigail and Pru. Despite the name, there are no more rattlesnakes at Rattlesnake Ridge than elsewhere around Miradero. Abigail and Pru once had to forego a ride there to work on their candle booth for the bazaar.[9]

Rivas Rivera[]

The Rivas River is a Western frontier river that was mapped by Jim Prescott in his younger days on the frontier as an explorer and adventurer.[16]

Sarsparilla[]

Sarsparilla is a frontier town.[4]

Sawtooth City[]

Sawtooth City is a frontier town. A Morgan filly, said by the auctioneer to be the real prize of Cannon City's Bi-Annual Equine Auction, was from Sawtooth City.[17]

Spring Falls[]

Spring Falls is a frontier town. Jane said she was traveling home there when she was robbed by the brigand Butch LePray.[4]

Tuckapaw reservation[]

The Tuckapaw reservation is the reservation of the Tuckapaw people near the frontier town of Pine Forks. Mixtli was born there, but relocated to land near Miradero with his horse Crow upon reaching the age of sixteen, which, among the Tuckapaw, is the age of manhood. Grayson and the Sheriff attempted to have him returned to the reservation, but Lucky and the PAL rescued him from the train back. The Badlands, which are impassable on foot, lie between the Tuckapaw reservation and Miradero.[2]

  11. In Part One of Lucky and Her New Family, Jim Prescott states that Lasso Flats is "10 hours away", and he presumably means by train. Given that frontier trains of the era ran at slower speeds of between about fifteen and twenty miles per hour, the town is likely between about 150 and 200 miles distant from Miradero. This makes Lasso Flats much further from Miradero than Silverlode.
